About Us
What is the Sun Country Golf House?
The Sun Country Golf House is an alliance of the leading golf-related organizations in the general areas of New Mexico and West Texas. The alliance of these associations makes this entity the epicenter for golf in our area.
What is the Sun Country PGA?
The Sun Country Section PGA was established in 1974 as one of the 41 Sections that make up the Professional Golfers Association of America. The Section (the state of New Mexico and El Paso County, Texas) is made up of more than 200 PGA Members and Apprentices. The mission of the Section is to promote participation and enjoyment in the game of golf for all levels of golfers. The Sun Country PGA had auspicious beginnings as Lee Trevino donated his 1972 New Mexico Open winnings to the Sun Country founding fathers so they could actually create the Section. Many PGA Tour Professionals have been associated with Sun Country including Trevino, Notah Begay, Kent Jones and Rich Beem to name a few.
What is the Sun Country Amateur Golf Assn.?
The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association was founded in 1976. Since its beginnings, the association has matured into one of the United States Golf Association's most excellent and efficient representatives. The SCAGA provides administrative services for all amateurs playing in the geographic area of New Mexico and West Texas. Our purpose is to promote mutual trust and friendly relationships among members: by encouraging and promoting successful golf operations; by aiding courses and clubs through study and research in the care, maintenance and improvement of greens and fairways; by developing educational programs related to the Rules of Golf; by conducting tournaments; by arranging tournament dates with minimal conflict among golf clubs and associations; by providing a handicap system for members; and by cooperating with other golf associations in the region.
Back Story
Essentially the SCSPGA is the representative body for PGA Golf Professionals in our Section and the SCAGA is the representative body for Amateur golfers in our Section. The two organizations have essentially the same goal, to promote the game of golf in our area. With the blessing of each group's Board of Directors, the two organizations have combined staffing and resources. This will allow the two organizations to cast a wider net of influence while furthering their goals together. Educating the public on the organizations, providing a great tournament schedule for Pros and Amateurs alike, executing a junior tour for youth golfers, making New Mexico a golfing destination for golfers outside our borders and generally improving and promoting the game of golf are the focuses of this new collaboration.
